From the preface:

“I purpose that the reader of this complete Illustrated History of Rome shall be aided and interested in his study by such a panorama of Historical Pictures and other illustrations as has never before embellished the history of any nation. On a recent visit to Europe, while visiting the great Galleries of Painting and Sculpture, and turning over the Portfolios of Engravings in the Public Museums, I was struck with the number and the beauty of subjects devoted to the illustration of Roman History.†“We know that the early History of Rome, like that of all nations, is legendary; but the legendary traditions of the Roman people are so rich and so beautiful, that they give an insight into the early genius of the people. Moreover, mingled with these poetic traditions, there are accounts of laws and institutions which undeniably existed.â€

The front board on volume one is separated and the rear hinge is weak. The bindings are other wise solid and secure. The plates are clean and bright with some scattered edge toning/marks.
