Description
Original antique artifact from the Yoruba people of Western Africa, today's Nigeria. It is an "Apo Ifa" - a diviner's two-piece sash, a most important and personalized accessory from the ritual clothing worn by mystic diviners (Babalawo) in the Yoruba culture. Ifa diviner's had a very high status in the society, and such sashes and bag would indicate this - using a variety of materials and arrangements. In this case, both pieces of the sash are hand stitched from multiple colored pieces of textile (cotton fabric) over card, and embossed brass plates in the fronts - eight rectangular forms branching from a central rosette with repousse ornamentation. Antique, late 19th/early 20th century. Original Yoruba tribal artifact from the period, NOT a newer reproduction or tourist handicraft. Measurements: Approx. 11" x 11" panels, 31" overall with strap. Weighs about 1.5 lbs.
