Description
Sir Joshua Reynolds (British, 1723-1792). Portrait of a Lady, possibly Lady Charlotte Johnston [Johnstone], oil on canvas, unsigned. Bust length portrait of a Lady wearing dark red cloak edged in ermine over a white dress, with unpowdered brown hair and strand of pearls to her neck. Labels to verso of stretcher for Newhouse Gallery (New York), also a period paper label (possibly for auction or gallery) reading "10924 Reynolds" Approx. 32" x 28" (frame), 26" x 21.5" (canvas). Note: gallery label to verso states the sitter to be Lady Charlotte Johnston nee. Montagu, however the sitter does not resemble #1020 in Mannings' Catalogue Raisonne depicting Lady Johnstone. #1021 (Mannings) presents a second portrait falsely previously attributed to the sitter, which also does not resemble Lady Johnstone. It is suggested that the painting offered in this lot is a work circa 1760 contemporary to the painting of these other portraits, sitter unknown. Provenance: From the Estate of Louise Barringer of South Carolina; by descent, Mary Scott Rooker of Atlanta, GA.
Condition
Relined; in-painting to ear and chest area; 0.25" abrasion with paint loss to hair.
