Edwin Oman (1905 -1985) w/c Latin American Marketplace. Watercolor painting, signed, original frame. Scene of a busy Latin American Street Marketplace, many figures. Well listed American Artist. Size Image 20.75 in. x 27.5 in.; outer frame 30 in. x 36.5 in. ASKart: Edwin Louis Oman was born on August 25, 1905 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Albert and Michalina (Dybizbanska) Omankowski. At the time of the 1930 U.S. Census, he was living with his parents in Chicago and described himself as a "commercial artist". In 1936, he had shortened his name and was working for Vogue Wright Studio in Chicago. About 1937, he met Eastman Boomer, later a theatrical producer, who later became his lifelong partner. By 1940, they moved to New York City, where Oman began to paint, exclusively with water colors. He exhibited at the annual combined exhibitions of the New York Water Color Club and the American Water Color Society held in New York City in February 1940 and February 1944. He painted landscapes, cityscapes, and seascapes, signing his work simply "Oman". He was a member of the American Water Color Society. He never married and had no children. At the time of his death on June 15, 1985, Edwin Oman was living in LaGrange, Illinois.
