Emilie DeS. Atlee, a portrait and landscape painter captured people, cities and the land of the Atlantic seaboard in her pastels, watercolors and oils. Many of her scenes are of the seashore or the flow of light-rivers in the city. Others depict the countryside or a covered bridge.
Born in Bethlehem in 1915, Mrs. Atlee was trained at the Spring Garden Institute, formerly at Broad and Spring Garden Streets, in the late 1930s and early 1940s.
Mrs. Atlee not only was an artist, she also taught in the 1960s and 1970s at the Main Line Center of the Arts in Haverford. She also acted as juror in juried shows at the center.
Mrs. Atlee was a member of Artists Equity and the Philadelphia Water Color Society. In New England, she was a familiar figure at artist communities in Rockport and Nantucket, Mass., and on Monhegan Island, Maine.
One project of hers was painting the portraits of musicians who played for the Philadelphia Orchestra. Another project was a montage of the city's historic sites. The piece, called In Philadelphia, was displayed in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and at the former John Wanamaker department store, in Center City.
A great joy was teaching. At a time before televised art classes, Mrs. Atlee would paint and lecture at the same time.
