Description
1898 Death of King Arthur Malory Morte D’Arthur & Browne Religio Medici 5v SET
“We shall now seek that which we shall not find”
― Thomas Malory
In 1485, “Le Morte Darther” or, “The Death of Arthur” was first published – the first time the traditional tales of King Arthur, Guinevere, Lancelot, Merlin, and the Knights of the Round Table finally was available to be read, instead of just told as a mythical story. It is, without equal, the best-known work of Arthurian literature and is a principal source for many plays, operas, and modern stories.
This rare 1898 edition of ‘The Death of Arthur’ was printed in four volumes and contains a supplementary fifth volume of Thomas Browne’s ‘Religio Medici and Urn-Burial’. Browne’s first and most recognizable work, ‘Religio Medici,’ was his view on many unorthodox religious speculations and controversial theologies. Even though reissues of the work excluded some of his more provocative theories, the book was still placed on the Index of Prohibited Books in 1645.
While the premise of the book is structured around the faith of Christianity, Browne expresses his own philosophical and metaphysical views, rather than simply relaying the Christian gospel. A contemporary of Browne’s, Guy Patin, comments on ‘Religio Medici’:
“[Religio Medici] is a strange and pleasant book, but very delicate and wholly mystical, not lacking in whit.”
This book was known to influence many subsequent philosophers and medical writers including Thomas de Quincey and his “Confessions of and English Opium Eater,” as well as Charles Lamb, and William Osler with his medical theories.
