Title: Bibliography of Mathematical Works Printed in America Through 1850
Author: Louis C. Karpinski - Louis Charles Karpinski was an American mathematician born in Rochester, New York. He was educated at Cornell University and in Europe at Strassburg. Karpinski also studied (1909–1910) at Columbia, where he was a fellow and a university extension lecturer. He taught at Berea College and at Oswego, New York at the Normal School there, then accepted a position at the University of Michigan where in 1919 he became full professor of mathematics. Dr. Karpinski devoted his attention chiefly to the history and pedagogy of mathematics.

An authority on the history of science, he was collaborator on the Archivo di Storia della Scienza and author of The Hindu-Arabic Numerals, with David Eugene Smith (1911), Robert of Chester's Latin Translation of the Algebra of Al-Khowarizmi (1915), and Unified Mathematics, with H. Y. Benedict and J. W. Calhoun (1913), and subsequently produced other publications. Karpinski served as the president of the History of Science Society from 1943–44.

From the preface: “I believe that bibliographers may regard this work as introducing a new method in their field, i.e., the far wider use of zinc line engravings. Reproduction of practically all major titles was made feasible by the generous cooperation of a Michigan alumnus, Clarence Epstean (B.S., 1920), president of the Walker Engraving Corporation, of New York. The methods suggested by Mr. Epstean made it possible to finance the illustration in this book.â€
Condition / Notes: This vintage text shows well with some indications of age and wear, including shelfwear, particularly to the spine. The binding and text block are sound. Text and illustrations remain clear and legible through mild uniform age toning. Marginalia in pencil appears in the text. This volume is ex-library, and bears institutional attachments and markings.
