Book Details: This early printing is bound in decorative tan paper and black cloth, with gilt spine lettering. The original orange, gold and black dust jacket is intact. The author’s signature appears on the front free endpaper.

From the introductory pages: “In 1930 Doctor A.S.W. Rosenbach founded a Fellowship in Bibliography at the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Christopher Morley was appointed the first fellow under this foundation. The present volume contains the five talks he delivered at the University in the Autumn of 1931.â€

From the Author’s Note: “These were not lectures but conversations. They were uttered viva voce and (except for occasional quotations) without benefit of notes, though not without much previous meditation. They were taken down with drastic fidelity by a disconcertingly accurate stenographer. Their colloquial character is obvious, and it requires courage to print them in this form. But to rewrite them would be to change their quality entirely. I have corrected a few very gruesome infelicities but otherwise they stand as spoken. Perhaps it is a salutary experience for a writer to learn by accurate report how disorderly his oral expression can be. Reading over the transcript of these talks I thought sadly of the name of a famous London surgeon whom I once found listed in Who’s Who-Sir Crisp English.â€
Condition / Notes: This antique volume shows well, with minimal indications of age and wear. The binding and text block are sound. Text is clear and crisp through mild age toning. The original dust jacket shows nicely, with minor chipping and loss to the upper portion of the spine and front.
