Attributed to David Petrovich Shterenberg ( Sterenberg )
oil on board, still life of a croissant and apple, against a modernist background. The reverse board inscribed 'Work of my father D. Shterenberg 1922-24, attested to, by F. Shterenberg , Moscow 1986' (Cyrillics). 46cm x 38cm, with various scratches and damage/losses to four corners as per images.
David Petrovich Shterenberg (1881-1948) : studied art both in Odessa and Paris (École des Beaux-Arts and Academie Vitti) where he studied alongside Kees van Dongen and was influenced by the art of Paul Cezanne and the Cubist movement, having works exhibited often at the Salon d'Automne where he met famous avant-garde artists including Henri Matisse and Chaim Soutine.. He held several appointments including Director of the Department of Fine Arts (IZO) at the People's Commissariat for Education and exhibited his work with other members the 'Jewish Society for the Furthering of the Arts' including El Lissitzky and later Marc Chagall. His unique style was unpopular with the Soviet authorities and after realising his paintings were being taken down from public display, he adopted a more 'realistic' style after the 1930s.
