Description
**First Time At Auction**
West Africa, Nigeria, Yoruba tribe, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. A large and ornate Yoruba Gelede mask depicting a female's head with an overall hemispheric form. The exterior is colored with bright blue indigo, red cinnabar, and chalky white pigments, and is further adorned with fifteen hammered brass plates with cross-shaped pointillist designs. Two folded strips of brass hang on either side of the characteristically-elongated face, and have small frayed string ends hanging below the lower terminals. Perforated on each side for suspension. A beautiful and skillfully-decorated mask! Size: 14.5" H (36.8 cm).
Provenance: ex-Kurquhill's Gallery, El Paso, Texas, USA; ex-private El Paso, Texas, USA collection, acquired early to mid 1970s
