Description
**Originally Listed At $250**

Charles Bird King (American, 1785-1862) Lithograph, "Wa- Baun- See, Pottawatomic Chief" Plate 68. McKenney, Thomas L. & Hall, James. History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia: F.W. Greenough, 1838-1844. A framed under glass, hand colored lithograph of Wa-Baun-See, A Pottawatomie Chief, published by F.W. Greenough, Philadelphia, Drawn, printed & coloured at I.T. Bowen's Lithographic Establishment, No. 94 Walnut St., 1836. Wa-baun-see, a Potawatomi chief who supported the British during the War of 1812. In 1814, however, he signed the Treaty of Greenville, thereby transferring Potawatomi allegiance to the United States. Following this, a series of treaties signed by Wabaunsee, resulted in the sale of Potawatomi lands around Lake Michigan to the United States. This portrait was painted by Charles Bird King during Wabaunsee's visit to Washington, D.C. in 1835. At this time Wabaunsee signed the treaty that sold the last of his tribal lands. This resulted in the Potawatomi Nation's move to Kansas in the 1840s where they settled in modern day Wabaunsee County, east of Topeka. Bird King's portrait of Wabaunsee illustrates the Native Americans' attraction to military garb. Representatives of the U.S. government customarily bestowed prominent chiefs like Wabaunsee lavish coats, hats, and swords to gain their favor. What's more, notice that Wabaunsee wears a Presidential Peace Medal and large trade silver earrings in this portrait. A wonderful example of Charles Bird King's artwork, as he was best known for his portrayals of important Native American leaders. Size: lithograph itself measures ~ 18" L x 13.25" W (45.7 cm x 33.7 cm); framed 19.5" L x 15" W (49.5 cm x 38.1 cm)
