RACKHAM, Arthur (1867 - 1939) A collection of three autograph letters signed by Arthur Rackham and one signed by Barbara Soper, his daughter, all to Mrs. K. Gregory1) Limpsfield, Surrey: 30 May [19]38. 2½ pages. Autograph letter signed 'Arthur Rackham' to 'Dear Mrs. Gregory' on Rackham's personal stationery. An encumbered letter, laden with troubles for the illnesses that struck his family and staff. His insistent close for finishing this commission, 'But I think I told you I had other work in hand to which I must give priority - though your picture will be worked in with it, as far as I can manage: and as quickly as I ought to.' In the original envelope. Rackham's wife Edyth, who had become ill during the war, continued to decline and became an invalid. Despite the trials of poor health and a diminishing market, Rackham continued to produce numerous works and completed commissions for clients like Mrs. Gregory. 2) Limpsfield, Surrey: 10 August [19]38. 3¼ pages. Autograph letter signed 'Arthur Rackham' to 'Dear Mrs. Gregory' on Rackham's personal stationery. A further note discussing the details for finishing a watercolor picture and sending it along to her American address. In the original envelope. 3) Limpsfield, Surrey: 12 September [19]38. 1¼ pages. Autograph letter signed 'Arthur Rackham' to 'Dear Mrs. Gregory' on Rackham's personal stationery, in pencil. Rackham names the watercolor he is working on for Mrs. Gregory and a Mrs. Ziegler. He gives the unfortunate news that his picture for 'Sleeping Beauty' will not be finished in time due to his illness and hospital stay. 4) Limpsfield, Surrey: 10 April [19]39. 2 pages. Autograph letter signed 'Yours very sincerely, Barbara Soper' to 'Dear Mrs. Gregory' on Rackham's personal stationery. Barbara, writes a proxy thank you for her mother who is in hospital suffering a fractured thigh. The picture for Mrs. Gregory has been completed by Rackham who has since passed on, Barbara writes, 'It was the last drawing my father ever made + the last time I saw him, about a week before his death, he was busy making arrangements for sending it.' Condition: uniform toning, usual folds.(6)
