Description
**Originally Listed At $700**
Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A pretty, shallow ceramic bowl from a little-known culture. The ovoid bowl has a gently convex base covered in incised decoration - geometric and zoomorphic swirls and lines make the bowl look like a tortoise shell when laid on its face. A thick lip is around the edge of the bowl; on its face, it has several incised lines on the lip. The rest of the interior is burnished smooth. The Marajoara - also known as the Marajo - flourished on Marajo Island, in the mouth of the Amazon River. They built impressive mounds and lived subsistence lifestyles while producing stylistically-unique, beautiful pottery like this. Size: 6.5" W x 6" H (16.5 cm x 15.2 cm); 6.65" H (16.9 cm) on included custom stand.
