Description
**First Time At Auction**
Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chimu, ca. 1100 to 1470 CE. A fine example of a wooden tupu, an ancient Andean version of a brooch or shawl pin. These are still used today to fasten lliqlla, shawls pinned at the front; pre-Columbian people presumably wore something very similar. This example is topped by a playful carving of a crouched human figure holding another human figure on his shoulders. The upper figure wears a large, crescent-shaped headdress commonly associated with authority in this culture. Size: 0.65" W x 5.75" H (1.7 cm x 14.6 cm); 7.25" H (18.4 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
