  • Title: Antique Japanese Tanto. Mino KANENARE - Signed
  • Origin: Japan
  • Date/Period: 1532-1555
  • Dimensions: Blade Length 11 3/4 in

A Mino province Sue-Seki school TANTO made by KANENARI, Tenbun (1532-1555). Kanenari made swords during the late Muromachi period (486 years ago). It was at the peak of his work period in 1542 when Mino came under control of Oda Nobunaga, during the Sengoku jidai, "Age of Warring States." Swords were in great demand at this time and Mino blades were very popular for their sharpness and durability. Tanto's were never mass produced and were always special order to the needs of the samurai ordering the blade. This tanto is 486 years old and in full polish displays clearly all the attributes of the shoshu tradition of sword making by it's quality and beautiful hamon. This tanto's hamon is in the Hitatsura style, a rare full temper with spots of tobiyaki that is clearly seen. The koshirae is from the Edo period (1600's). The menukis are high quality shakudo and appear to be a war turtle and a warring hawk. the tsuka (handle) is a rear string wrap in the style called Jabara-kake-maki, which is rarely seen, especially in it's origianl state as this is. The tsuba is Edo-period with stylized waves with dots of silver and gold to represent spray from the waves. This Tanto comes with a Kozuka blade made of shibuichi with cherry blossoms of shakudo and copper. The Nakago is signed "Kanenari". This is a 486 year old, beautiful, in full polish, signed Tanto with quality koshirae by a very good swordsmith. This is a true work of art.
