Audrey Hepburn guides viewers through some of the most beautiful gardens on earth, gliding and perching herself amid breathtaking landscapes in the six-part PBS television series "Gardens of the World," now available on home video.
The announcement of this video release came one day before the highly acclaimed actress died on Jan. 20.
Michael York narrates and Hepburn kind of floats in and out of the shows with some delicately crafted lines of information and a feeling for the vivid and captivating gardens. They're often referred to as estates, but they are more of an art form, especially with Hepburn in the middle of the picture. The photography of the gardens and flowers range from long shots that feature the patterns and colors to closeup pictures of single flowers or dew-covered buds.

The first of the six shows aired in March 1991 as part of PBS's fund-raising programming. Five more episodes were added.
The titles are:
"FORMAL GARDENS" This is the 1991 show with Hepburn as tour guide for an evolution of garden design from the Renaissance gardens of Italy (Villa Gamberaia, Villa Lante, Villa La Pietra) and the grand 17th-century gardens of France (Chateau de Courances, Versailles) to the influential 20th-century gardens of England.
"ROSES AND ROSE GARDENS" The story of the ultimate plant of legend, romance and beauty offers a look at France's La Roseraie de l'Hays les Roses and England's Mottisfont Abbey.
"TULIPS AND SPRING BULBS" Tells the story of bulbs that are intertwined with the history and art of an entire country and includes narcissus, hyacinth, muscari and bluebells as well as the English way with bulbs in a garden.
"FLOWERS AND FLOWER GARDENS" Hepburn walks and talks of Monet's garden in Giverny, France. She is joined by Penelope Hobhouse, author and garden designer, at Tintinhull House in England, where they agree that most of the world's great gardens are 20th-century creations.
"COUNTRY GARDENS" Author and garden designer John Brookes joins Hepburn to show how each nationality has its own version of a soft, gentle and romantic place with its heady smell. They visit the British countryside to show how climate and landscape shape the garden's content, and make a stop at Giardino del Ninfa south of Rome.
"PUBLIC GARDENS AND TREES" An interesting look at the trees and gardens that provide some urban dwellers their only link with nature. Many of these gardens were once private, such as George Washington's gardens at Mount Vernon.
Audrey Hepburn donated all the salaries she earned for her final projects to UNICEF, including Gardens Of The World, 1993)

Best Hepburn quote: Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, it's at the end of your arm. As you get older, remember you have another hand: the first is to help yourself, the second is to help others.
