Edward Ertz (Louisiana, Illinois, England, 1862 - 1954)
Born in Canfield, Illinois, Edward Ertz became a watercolor painter of landscapes, etcher especially noted for wood engraving, illustrator, and teacher with a distinguished career in America, France and England.
As a young man, he studied in Paris with Jules Lefebvre, Benjamin Constant, and Paul Delance, and then went to Chicago for five years to do an engraving apprenticeship. About 1881, he went to New Orleans where he established a lithography business that was active in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi. Among his commissions were mastheads for newspapers and lithographic views for the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial Exposition. A writer for a publication, The Industries of New Orleans, praised his business for having the first routing and ruling machines and wrote that it was "the largest establishment and really the only one of the kind in the south." (Mahe 128)
Apparently he also did more widespread travel. According to art historians, Peggy and Harold Samuels: "Included in his body of work are a number of paintings of Western American subjects. Listed painting titles included . . . Sunset, Grand Canyon." (p. 158)
From 1893 to 1897, Ertz was Professor of Watercolor at the Delecluse Academy in Paris; and he later taught art in King's Langley, Herts, England. However, for some years, he continued to send exhibition pieces back to New Orleans for the Artists Association.
He spent much of his career in London where he was a member of the Royal Society and contributed illustrations to many publications including the London Art Chronicle. However by 1929, he was living in Pulborough, Sussex, England where he died in 1954.
Exhibition venues included American Art Society of Philadelphia; Artists Association of New Orleans; Tulane Unviersity Annual Art and Industrial Exhibition; Tennessee Centennial and Internatonal Exposition in Nashville; Bristol Arts and Crafts in England; Grand Prix International in Rouen, France; and International Exposition in St. Etienne, France.
Among his memberships were the Artists Association of New Orleans; Royal Society of British Artists in London; Society of Arts, London; and the British Water Color Society.
