Description
**First Time At Auction**
Oceania, Fiji Islands, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A beautiful carved wooden cane with a knob-form handle, a slender body, and a midsection decorated with a pair of raised, stylized anthropomorphic figures. A set of spiraling grooves course down the tubular handle, and the lower body is decorated with several sections of segmented grooves. Both highly-stylized figures wear neatly-arranged garments and boast heart-shaped faces, and the eyes are inlaid with small shell fragments; one eye fragment of each figure is missing. Covered in lustrous coffee-hued patina, this is a fabulous example of Fijian artistry! Size: 2.125" W x 31.3" H (5.4 cm x 79.5 cm).
Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s

Condition
Light nicks and abrasions to surface, with one shell fragment missing from each figure, and light softening to some finer details, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits within some recessed areas, and fabulous coffee-hued patina throughout.
