**First Time At Auction**
Papua New Guinea, Middle Ramu and Upper Keram Rivers Basin, near Guam River entry, Misingi Village, Romkun culture, ca. mid-20th century. A male initiation figure with opposed hooks framing a stylized face atop a slender body. The lower body includes a face below a stylized, hook-shaped skirt, above another waist with long legs. Throughout Papua New Guinea, a number of peoples worked in what is known as the opposed-hooks style to adorn sacred figures, in which curved and pointed hooks are arranged on a vertical axis around a central design element. Size: 4.45" W x 43" H (11.3 cm x 109.2 cm); 44.5" H (113 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
