Description
This is a very old wood sculpture of a seated female ancestor, Dogon Peoples, Mali , West Africa.Carved wood with a well weathered surface suggesting use over many years. The figure features a female seated with hands placed on her knees in a regal fashion, her face, and chest , arms have completely eroded away on one side suggesting the figure lay on a cave or village shrine for a very long time before she was found and saved. Sculptures such as this were traditionally placed on personal or village shrines and acted as a medium to the spirit world. The owner could call on the ancestor spirits for help with a number of maladies, including infertility. The figure itself measures 16 inches tall.
