Wilkie Collins' first novel and second book, a story about the conquest of Rome by Alaric, using Gibbon's account as it source, and Bulwer-Lytton, Scott and Cooper as his models. Antonina was well received and Collins was praised as a worthy successor to Scott and Bulwer-Lytton, but he never again returned to historical fiction.
