Description
1906 Sir Richard Burton Exploration Africa & Oriental Sexuality Illustrated
Richard Burton was one of the most prolific English translators of the 19th-century, in fact, he is best known for his unabridged English translation of ‘Arabian Nights’. This version gained popularity despite its extensive use of sexually explicit imagery and descriptive footnotes about Oriental sexual practices. Burton knew about the strict laws against sexual material in literature; however, it did not stop him from including it in his writing.
Thomas Wright, an English biographer, published ‘The Life of Sir Richard Burton’ mostly, it seems, to expose Burton’s controversial views. Wright even claimed that “Burton had not done his own translation but had taken from [John] Payne at least three-quarters of his entire work.”
