Nicolas de Largilliere (French, 1656 - 1746) Born in Paris, Nicolas was the pupil of Antoine Goubeau in Antwerp and later of Lely in London. His work with Lely brought him to the attention of Charles II whose portrait he painted. He came to Paris after spending four years in England and soon gained a large following as a portraitist. In this following Nicolas cultivated an entourage of skilled artist that studied and worked with him. We offer an antique portrait of a woman whom you could admire during the biennial at the Carrousel of the Louvre in Paris. The wearing of the face, slightly three-quarters and the skillfully shaded cheek, the lively expression of the eyes and the drawing of the mouth, the sound of the broad red drape accented by the touches of light, the fineness of the lace long bodice and standing freely under the sleeves make this painting a perfect testimony of the art of portraiture under the reign of Louis XIV.
