Marcus Manilius was a first century Roman poet known for his famous collection of astrological poetry ‘Astronomica.’ This book is thought to be the first extensive work on astronomy and astrology – it describes various celestial phenomena and goes into great detail regarding the zodiac. It also considers many of the celestial theories proposed by Xenophanes and Hesiod and their perceptions of creation. Other topics of discussion include formation of constellations, placement of sun and moon, emphasis on the Milky Way, exploration of comets and meteors as an omen for earthly disasters and plagues.
