Description
Small portable writing desk in Spanish Colonial form with red and gilt chinoiserie decoration, the work of Chinese laborers sold into servitude and brought to the Spanish colonies on Portuguese slaving ships. As on the Continent, the fashion for all things Chinese was satisfied by local manufacture as well as by imports. This example is in rough condition. The back is present but completely detached. The fabulous forged iron lock is locked and we don't have the key. Most original painted decoration remains on front and top. Sides and back show significant losses . A beautiful but battered survivor of a scarce form. Approx. 16" x 10 1/4" x 9 1/2".
