Description
John Woodhouse Audubon (1812-1862), Nuttal's Hare, Plate 94, No. 19, first edition lithograph from the VIVIPAROUS QUADRUPEDS OF NORTH AMERICA, Philadelphia, 1845-48, by John J. Audubon, lithographed, printed and colored by J. T. Bowen. Depicts two hares in a landscape setting with title LEPUS NUTTALLII, BACH / NUTTALL'S HARE, MALES, NATURAL SIZE. Plain dark stained wood frame with gilt rabbet edge. 21-1/4" x 27- 1/2" sight, 23-5/8" x 29-3/4" framed. Note: In the 1830s, an aging John James Audubon set out with his sons, John Woodhouse and Victor, to document the animals of North America. Audubon's aim was to present the country's wildlife in a large format similar to that used in his work on THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, with several of the animals portrayed actual size. The book was completed three years before John J. Audubon's death. (Additional high-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com.)
