At the behest of George Gallego, principal of Intermediate School 52 in the South Bronx, Tim Rollins, a twenty-six-year-old artist, developed a curriculum for at-risk youth that would combine visual arts with literacy lessons. His aim was not to create mediocre, student work, but instead to elevate the work of his marginalized students, who were dubbed the Kids of Survival (K.O.S.) to the arena of fine art. Eventually, his collaborations extended beyond the confines of the school system, with permanent spaces in the Bronx and later Chelsea and a traveling workshop. The fruits of this collaboration have been exhibited widely, from Mary Boone Gallery to two Venice Biennales.

This piece depicts a conversation between the Devil and St. Anthony during one of the monk’s temptations in the desert. This work combines canonical literature with abstract forms, both traditionally linked to the white, upper classes, in a way that highlights the precarious social position of the group of marginalized identities that created the piece.
