A subtle, signed Japanese woodblock print by Toshi Yoshida (1911-1995). Titled “Cherry Blossoms by the Gate,” the print depicts a large cherry tree in early stages of bloom arched over the entrance gate of a home. At the entrance, a woman holds the hand of a small boy. This beautiful, tranquil print has a pencil signed title and signature in English (lifetime edition), and also in Japanese within the image (seal). Fine impression, color and condition; no toning or tears; full margins, C. 1940's. Archivally matted and framed. DIMENSIONS: Print is 9 7/8” (25 cm) x 14 1/2” (36.8 cm) plus margins. Framed size is 17 3/4" (45 cm) x 23 1/4" (59 cm).

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Toshi Yoshida was the first son of Hiroshi Yoshida, one of the Shin Hanga school masters. He followed the family tradition and the centuries old Japanese craft of woodblock printmaking, adopting and developing his signature style. Following a traditional lower and middle school education, Toshi's interest in art lead him to four years of study of oil painting at the Taiheiyo Art School. His close relationship with his father was instrumental in the pursuit of his art. Together father and son traveled Japan and the world, examining and sketching people and places around them. Toshi’s body of work includes 396 woodblock prints that range from traditional Japanese landscapes, to animals of Africa, to complete abstracts.
