Unused printed stationery of the North County [Henry] Wallace for President Committee and congressional candidate Rockwell Kent. 1 page
Rare. Other memorabilia of Kent's lackluster political campaign, his only foray into electoral politics, is virtually non-existent.
During the Truman-Dewey presidential contest of 1948, former Vice President Wallace was the left-wing presidential nominee of the Communist-backed national Progressive Party; in New York, his supporters ran as candidates of the state American Labor Party. Artist (and local farmer) Rockwell Kent was its congressional candidate in the overwhelmingly Republican 33rd District, represented by a GOP incumbent who won this time with 64% of the vote; the Democrat received 34%. Kent less than 3%, one of the worst showings of any ALP candidate. His quixotic race led to a Red-baiting boycott that forced him to give up the modest dairy business he had run in Au Sable Forks for over 20 years.
