Description

Watercolor on paper, c. 1925, signed 'Carl G. Cutler' lower right.

17 x 25 in. (sheet), 26 1/4 x 32 in. (frame).

Note: Carl Cutler was born in Massachusettes and studied portrait painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston in the late 1890s. After working at the Academie Julien in Paris with Maurice Prendergast, Charles Hovey Pepper and Ambrose Webster, Cutler formed the 'Four Boston Painters' group and showed in the ground-breaking Armory Show in 1913. Cutler began painting on the Maine coast soon after the Armory Show, pursuing in depth his love of watercolor and the landscape of Maine. Cutler was a respected color theorist, co-authoring in 1923 a book titled Modern Color that detailed a system of color scales and how to imitate natural light through their use. Cutler's watercolors are emblematic of his dedication to color theory and his passion for the Maine landscape.

The estate of the artist.
