Description
1667 1st ed Phaedrus & Aesop Fables Illustrated Emblemata Greek Literature Latin
“Things are not always what they seem; the first appearance deceives many; the intelligence of a few perceives what has been carefully hidden.”
– Phaedrus
Phaedrus was a 1st-century fabulist and Roman poet known for his five books of verse fables. Many of his tales are adaptions of Aesop’s famous tales, but he does include his own new stories as well. One major difference between Aesop and Phaedrus, however, is Phaedrus’s treatment of the moral. Phaedrus emphasized the moral of the story much more than Aesop did.
This edition of Phaedrus’s Fables contains an incredible collection of 96 illustrations. These illustrations make this printing one of the most desirable editions of Phaedrus, and this edition did not see any reprints – the first and only such edition. Edited and adapted by Johannes Laurentius.
