Description
1787 Benjamin Franklin Savages of North America INDIANS Florida Scots Magazine
An incredibly rare 1787 printing of ‘The Scots Magazine’. This volume includes an incredibly important printing of Benjamin Franklin’s account of Native American Indians, or, as he claims, ‘Savages of North America’. In this essay, Franklin describes the culture of Indians, the roles of men and women, traditions and communication, warriors, Indian mythology, and attempts of preachers to convert them to Christianity.
According to Alfred Aldridge, Franklin had varied purposes in writing ‘Remarks Concerning the Savages’. He uses this work to satirize religion, economics, and imperialism, but also to give a true and attractive portrait of the Indian character.
Other contents include accounts of crime in Tuscany, development of settlements in Florida, and more.
