Description
1886 Campfire Chats of Civil War Washington Davis Prisons Americana Illustrated
Washington Davis published ‘Campfire Chats of the Civil War’ in hopes of “preserving a few points of history, and some features of army life not before delineated.” (Davis, preface). Davis recognized that many of the memories of veterans were perishing and wanted to better the young readers of Civil War history.
While this work does discuss aspects of the war, it is known better for its descriptions of life on the battlefield and camp. Stories include tales from Texas prisons, Union soldiers at Andersonville, making pancakes at camp, origin of the ‘stars and stripes’, and accounts of surgeons deciding whether to amputate limbs or not. Davis includes the hymns and songs that soldiers sung to give hope and joy during the war.
