Description
Minnie Evans (American, 1892-1987) attributed: Surrealist Portrait. Ink and crayon on paper, signed in pencil bottom right, unframed. Minnie Evans was a highly regarded southern, black folk artist. Drawing influence from her dreams and surrealism, Evans admitted that she was unsure how to interpret her own works, saying "When I get through with them I have to look at them like everybody else. They are just as strange to me as they are to anybody else." During her lifetime, she found a moderate amount of success, exhibiting at Art Image Gallery of New York and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
