Description
Rare Rookwood porcelain bisque hand painted doll head, having tawny blonde hair, wavy forelocks, baby blue eyes and a pouty pink mouth. The shoulders have corner holes to join onto a cloth doll’s body. Impressed with the Rookwood logo and 1918 date and on the underside the shape 5803 E. Measures 5 1/4 inches and 4 inches across the shoulder. The design is attributed to Cincinnati’s acclaimed figure sculptor, Clement Barnhorn. A like example is featured in Peck’s The Second Book of Rookwood, page 43. Excellent condition. A few of these were made by Rookwood during WW I because porcelain doll’s heads from Germany were unavailable. This is the only one we have ever sold or seen.
