Description
An Egyptian Revival mother of pearl inlaid sunrise/sunset settee
possibly Cairo

height of back 38 1/2in (98cm); height of seat 20in (51cm); width of seat 50in (127cm); depth of seat 18 1/2in (47cm)Provenance: Property from a Collector, New York City.Footnote: A related example, with replaced upholstery, is in the collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum. Another similar piece, with original applique upholstery and matching stool and armchair is in the collection of Fulford Place, Brockville, Ontario, Canada. Believed to be acquired by the Fulford family in Egypt sometime before 1911, the upholstery on the Fulford Place settee was removed for analysis and conservation and it was discovered that the original covers were made from recycled rags, as was a typical means of manufacture in Cairo and the surrounding area circa 1900.

Condition
Structurally sound. With an overall nutty brown color to timber. Armrests and side rails slightly lighter in color. General marks, nicks, scratches and wear commensurate with age and use. Some scattered nicked losses to Horus disc carving of crestrail. Patination to metal back support rods. Adjusting mechanism works well. Wear and losses to upholstery, particularly to seat, as visible in catalogue photo. Wear to feet.
