DESCRIPTION: Three Great Lakes beaded garters. Includes: 1) Beaded Chippewa (Great Lakes) beaded garter with a white ground and running diamond motif with red/blue/white yarn and thread ties on either end. 3" x 19" not including ties. Light soiling. 2) Beaded Great Lakes tribal garter consisting of an unusual pastel beaded wavy line or mountain motif on clear bead ground with red/blue and white fringe. Circa 1890-1910. 4" x 11-1/2" not including thread fringe. Light wear and toning as expected with age. 3) Chippewa tribal garter circa 1880-1910. White ground with black and green florals and geometrics. Ends with orange fringe ties. 2" x 11" not including fringe ties. Very good condition. PROVENANCE: Collected by Theodore Kepner Long (1856 - 1947) and then by gift to the Carson Long Military Academy. Raised in Millerstown (Pa.), Long attended Yale Law School before relocating to North Dakota where he became publisher of the Mandan Pioneer. He rose to prominence in the legal profession becoming a States Attorney for lands West of the Missouri River in 1885 and Attorney for N.P.R.R. Bismark North Dakota in 1887. The then moved to Chicago in 1894 before returning to New Bloomfield Pennsylvania and founding Carson Long Military Academy in 1914. MEASUREMENTS: See Description. CONIDITON: See Description.
