This is a exceedingly rare and very finely carved wood sculpture of a Mboko or bowl bearer from the Luba or Zela peoples of Congo, central Africa.This magic sculpture was designed to forecast future events, a lovely lady and a vivid example of how knowledge and divination are visualized in Luba culture. Luba bowl figures commemorate the first mythical Luba diviner, Mijibu wa Kalenga, and were primarily the preserve of royal diviners, who used them as oracles.Carved wood with well handled and polished surface suggesting handling and ritual use over many years. One of the finest Luba sculptures we have ever offered. The figure itself measures 8.5 inches tall x 6 inches tall.
