Item Details
Description
A large and beautifully painted portrait miniature by Aimee Thibault. Done in watercolor on organic wafer, the work shows a distinguished older gentleman of serious mien, set against a dark background, in a black tie and jacket with a white shirt and collar. The size of the miniature is due to Thibault having worked in France for a large part of her life, where such portraits were often done on a much grander scale than miniatures in the U.S. The portrait is signed Aimee Thibault along the right edge.
Condition of the piece is excellent, with no cracks, flaking, or chips (except normal minor losses at the extreme edges, where it meets the frame). However, the true right side of the sitter's coat has had some type of restoration done, and the texture is different. For this reason the painting has been priced well below what such a rare and exquisitely limned piece would normally sell for. The cast foliate frame, c1911, is not original to the painting, but complements it perfectly. The sight size of the miniature is 3 5/8" by 2 7/8", with a frame size of 4" by 3 1/4".
NOTE: Aimee Thibault (1780-1868) was born in Paris and exhibited at the Salon from 1804 to 1810. (The Salons, beginning in 1667, was the official art exhibition of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Between 1748 and 1890 it was arguably the greatest annual or biennial art event in the Western world.) She came to the U.S. for a short period (1834-1837) and worked in NYC during that time. Her miniatures are in various museums, including the Met, and that of the New York Historical Society.
