This is a very rare old field used carved wooden sculpture known as a "Bochio" , an effigy of a Female Spirit Idol with human hair on the head and genitals, with varied and layered surface patina, suggesting ritual applications of sacraments or offerings. The sculpture of a female adorned with glass beads ,heavy brow and nose made of some type of tree resin, inset shell eyes, ears pierced for decoration , and hands to abdomen in a classic pose. There is an energy to this old sculpture , a "spirit in the wood".Fon peoples, Benin, Africa. Ca. Early 20th century.
