Description
TITLE/CONTENT OF MAP: 'SOUTH AMERICA, SHEET I., ECUADOR, NEW GRANADA, VENEZUELA AND PARTS OF BRAZIL AND GUYANA'
This fascinating map of the North West part of South America/Amazonia covers Ecuador, New Granada (Colombia), Venezuela, and part of Brazil and the Guianas. The map marks "a knot of low mountains here according to Humboldt, called Sierra Tunuhy supposed to abound in mineral riches, El Dorado?". The locations of numerous missions and Amazonian tribes are marked. The map notes many landmarks and features of the rivers, eg "Schomburgk quits the canoes and crosses the Ariwana Mt.". It shows the location of the then proposed Panama canal, as well as the proposed Cupica canal to unite the port of that name with the river Naipi, flowing into the Gulf of Darien.
