Item Details
Description
  • Title: FD17 POSTER POSSIBLE SILVER TRANSITION 1966 JEFFERSON AIRPLANE
  • Artist: Mouse / Kelley
  • Printing Date 1966
  • Size/Format: POSTER
  • Additional Info:One of the first 20 posters from FAMILY DOG ! #FD17. The show, produced and promoted by Chet Helms. The poster art is by Stanley Mouse and Alton Kelley. The central image is one from 1893 by an artist from Germany named Franz Stuck and it's his most famous peice or work called THE SIN (Die Sunde). How appropriate to have this woman for the poster of two bands with women on lead vocals.
The show was July of 1966, at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The bands were the
Jefferson Airplane, led by Signe Anderson as the lead singer and The Great Society with lead singer Grace Slick. Who would have known that in only two months, Signe would drop out of Airplane and Grace would become their lead singer. In July 1966, Anderson informed Bill Graham that she was quitting the band after a series of shows they were playing in Chicago, realizing that bringing her newborn child, with then-husband Jerry Anderson, on the road was not feasible. Graham, however, asked her to stay with the band through the October shows at the Winterland Ballroom in San Francisco, to which she agreed. This gave the band time to search for her replacement, eventually choosing Grace Slick after Sherry Snow declined their offer. What a story to tell, to those that see this poster in your music room.
The PRE-CONCERT first run of the poster was approx 1000 pieces and ran from Silver coloring to Gold coloring. Early in the run the printer ran out of silver ink and introduced gold ink. It's estimated that there were only a few hundred printed in silver with all the rest being printed in the more common gold. Between the two there were perhaps a few dozen that were "transitional" meaning it wasn't quite silver or quite gold but a mixture of both. We believe this is one of the TRANSITION PIECES, showing a bit of both color, and this one leans more toward the silver. We have held this poster up to a gold FD17 specimen and a silver, and we believe this is poster should be classified as a TYPE 1 - FIRST PRESSING FD16. Due to this, the poster is priced accordingly. The poster has been mounted on linen and is ready for framing. There are minor pinholes in the corners, and small tape mark on the left edge boarder. Depending on how you frame it with a matte, they will never be seen and are not factored into our pricing.
