Charles Tatossian Garo (Canadian, b. 1925). Old man smoking a pipe portrait. Approx 24" tall x 20"wide canvas sight size. Condition is very good as shown. See photos. Of Armenian Decent, Charles Garo was born in Lyon, France, August 16, 1925. A child prodigy, from an artistic family, he was commissioned to paint the Egyptian King Faruk's portrait at the tender age of 10. He perfected his talent at the "Beaux-Arts" of Paris in 1947, at which time he painted the portrait of the then famous Josephine Baker (actress/dancer). He has since been commissioned to paint the portraits of JoJo and many other celebrities. Charles Garo immigrated to Montreal, Canada from Alexandria, Egypt in 1960. He was a professor of fine art at McGill University and was the host of his very own television series, "Le Plaisir de Peindre," from 1980 to 1999. An honorary member of the Arts Club, Garo also had his own gallery in Montreal for over 30 years. His distinctive style demonstrates his eternal commitment to quality.
