Hurley grew up in New Mexico attending school in Los Alamos and settled in New Mexico later on. He was an Air National Guard pilot during Vietnam and after getting his law degree, a practicing attorney in New Mexico for 13 years. He eventually gave up his practice in order to paint full time.
