Linda Lovett (Arizona, born 1944)
Linda Lovett was born in Pecos, TX in 1944 during World War II. The family moved back to California about a year later and settled near Los Angeles. The building business was booming for Dad, and the 4-year-old artist began drawing cowboys and horses in his books. Television was in its earliest stages and the artist was influenced by TV western heroes. Lovett soon ran out of books to draw in and the artist was given proper materials to save the rest of the family library.
The love of art continued, but the big break came when still in high school. The art teacher recognized the talent and allowed Lovett to develop the oil paint medium and realistic style. Fellow students saw the beautiful horse paintings and commissioned the artist to do portraits of their horses, friends and family. In 1961 an art career was born. Those first works were painted on particle board, but with the money from those paintings Lovett could finally afford to paint on stretched canvas.
Lovett earned an AA college degree in art, but preferred to study the Old Masters in California museums. Favorite masters were Michelangelo and Rembrandt. In 1987 Lovett studied under a contemporary master, Don Roache, and that brought vivid color into the artists paintings. Favorite masters of the brush stroke are John Singer Sargent, Richard Schmid and Oleg Stavrowsky. Favorite inspirational artists are Greg Olsen and Morgan Weistling.
As a result of faith in God, the artist spent 1967 to 1997 concentrating on Bible paintings and powerful dramatic portrayals of Jesus the Christ. At the same time Lovett continued to accept painting commissions and worked at different art related jobs including: Art Director of C.S. Lovetts (fathers) Christian ministry for 20 years, extensively illustrating his books; and as a professional photographer for 3 years. But it was difficult to paint and make a living, and it was the typical "starving artists" life.
Opportunities in California were few in 1993, so with the help of family and friends, it was time to pack up and move to Chino Valley, Arizona, one of the main Southwest art states and home of many famous artists. What a difference in light. No more smoggy brown sky but beautiful deep blue sky, fluffy white clouds, endless views and spectacular rainbows during the monsoon. All of a sudden the paintings came alive. Western subjects were seen in a new lightliterally. Surrounded by ranches, mountain ranges and state land with Pronghorn antelope the artist returned to the subjects that were first drawn in fathers books long ago.
