Admiral David Porter was an American Civil War naval officer who, according to Larned, “saw more of the Civil War” than anyone else.

Per Eicher on this work,

“It remains a curious source worthy of investigation. Filled with scenes of local color, anecdotes about famous naval and army officers, and accounts of Porter’s participation in a variety of campaigns. Porter recounts his experience in the secession crisis beginning at Fort Pickens, describes the attack on Fort Morgan, and details the early assault on New Orleans. He outlines the difficulties of Butler’s administration of New Orleans and takes great care to describe the movements up the Mississippi. He recalls meetings with Lincoln, Stanton, Seward. Porter describes Grant at Cairo, a first meeting with Sherman, and the all-out effort on Vicksburg.
