Series of 22 letters written from the then Western frontier of Illinois by English immigrant Morris Birkbeck to friends in England concerning "...subjects interesting to an emigrant." Birkbeck, a Quaker, was already familiar with the nearby Indiana utopian pietist community of Harmony – later re-settled by Robert Owen as New Harmony. "These letters were written to friends and inquirers in England and contain a wealth of information about economic and social conditions in the West" - Buck. HOWES B467. BUCK 105.

Binding worn, chips at spine, front board separating; large chip to rear free endpaper and smaller chip to rear blank; 3" closed tear from stub to the US map, small stubtear to English prairie map; good.
