LYMAN BYXBE (American 1886-1980) AN ETCHING, "Dream Lake," on paper, signed in pencil L/L. 4 1/2" x 3 3/8"; together with Carman Bonanno (American b. 1901) "The Nest," on paper, signed in pencil L/R. 5 7/8" x 3 7/8" Note: Lyman Byxbe was one of many great artists who have turned to the majestic Rocky Mountains for inspiration and the subject matter of their compositions. Born in Pittsfield, Illinois, he began at an early age to teach himself to draw. He became a successful commercial artist in Omaha, Nebraska, where he studied the art of etching under Mark Levings. In 1938 Byxbe moved to Estes Park, Colorado, where he had a summer studio for many years. All of the artist's time and talent was devoted to copper plate etching in his mountain studio. Lyman Byxbe has been honored by membership in the Chicago Society of Etchers, Miniature Print Society, Kansas City, Missouri, and Northwest Printmakers, Seattle, Washington. He is represented in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Arts; at the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.; and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.
