A Western Greek Vessel in the Form of a Siren

Item Details

Description

This is a wonderful and published(!) vessel, elegantly shaped as a siren (a creature with the body of a bird and the head of a woman). It belongs to a rare group of Western Greek plastic vessels of the 5th century BC. Details of the siren were added in red paint: the contours of the face are traced, the wings are painted with rows of lines, imitating feathers; the feathers of the fan-shaped tail are also indicated; her hair, which is parted in the middle and partly incised, is also painted red. A remarkable and funny scene was drawn in red on the breast of the siren: a grotesque and naked man is bending forward or perhaps standing on all fours, while a large bird behind him is pecking at his large erect penis.
