Notes: "A skeleton suit... an ingenious contrivance for displaying the symmetry of a boy's figure by fastening him into a very tight jacket... and then buttoning his trousers over it so as to give his legs the appearance of being hooked on just under his arm pits."

The skeleton suit originated in England in the late 18th century and is considered one of the earliest garments designed specifically for children. Consisting of a form-fitting jacket and trousers, joined by buttons, it was worn by boys between the ages of three and ten.

Condition
In overall very good, professionally restored condition. Scattered craquelure. Layer of soiling along with
a few pinprick-sized areas of discoloration. A few scattered very small areas of losses to paint surface.
Evidence of past restoration: small scattered areas of filler or touch-up inpainting throughout - please see
additional images under UV light. Canvas does not appear to be relined, but has been restretched. Some
faint dulling/yellowing of varnish layer.
